Perfection Fresh has partnered with packaging manufacturer Detpak to introduce a new strawberry punnet design, which will be rolled out in Coles stores from July. The 240g packaging aims to improve both visual presentation and functionality, incorporating design features such as ventilation holes for freshness and large viewing windows that allow shoppers to see the fruit from multiple angles.
Developed by Detpak’s Research & Development team at its LaunchPad facility, the punnet is made primarily from recyclable board and is designed to facilitate easier hand-packing, transport, and storage. According to the companies, the board-based packaging reduces plastic use by approximately 87% compared to conventional options and includes a locking mechanism to keep the contents secure.
Perfection Fresh representatives noted that the new design was developed in response to consumer behaviour, with an emphasis on product visibility and shelf appeal. The packaging also offers space for branding and messaging not typically achievable with plastic containers.
Detpak highlighted the shift toward fibre-based packaging in Australia’s fresh produce industry and stated that the new punnet supports product protection and presentation while aligning with broader sustainability goals.
The Signature Premium Strawberry Punnet will be introduced to the industry at the Hort Connections conference and trade show on June 4, with in-store trials expected to begin shortly thereafter.
