John Tyas – Avocados Australia: “Domestic demand for avocados strong, exports going very well”

Australia has a year-round supply of avocados, due to the wide range of climates across the country. The volumes are good for most of the year with a lighter supply around January and February.

“We are at the tail end of the Western Australian season and just commencing the North Queensland season, starting with the Shepard variety, moving back into Hass in April. In general, the growing conditions have been good, but we have had a lot of wet weather in North Queensland which has cut major roads and delayed transport, but this has cleared now,” said John Tyas, CEO of Avocados Australia.

In recent years the Australian market has seen an oversupply of avocados, but this financial year supply has been lighter and this will continue until about July when supplies will ramp up with big volumes expected from Western Australia from July to December. At the moment demand is very strong in Australia. “Exports are going very well, particularly to Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia. From July WA is expected to increase their volumes again this year into Thailand, Japan, and India.”

Australian avocados gained access to the Indian market last year and according to John, it is a slow burn. “We believe it will be a great market but it will take time to grow, we need to be patient and increase supplies over time. As for new markets, at the moment we are very focussed on trying to get market access to China.”
