Nutrano Produce Group has successfully trialed compostable fruit stickers on select citrus lines, marking a step towards sustainability in the fresh produce industry. The trial aimed to reduce the environmental impact of traditional fruit stickers, which are typically made from non-biodegradable materials and contribute to landfill waste.
The compostable stickers meet the Australian standard (AS 5810) for home compost bins and industrial composting. In partnership with labelling company Sinclair, Nutrano tested the compostable stickers across its citrus supply chain, including distribution to supermarkets and wholesale markets. The stickers were evaluated under various climate conditions, including irradiation and fumigation, to ensure they maintained adhesion, durability, and functionality.
Traditional fruit PLU stickers play a role in product traceability and brand recognition, allowing consumers to identify the fruit variety and trace its origin. However, their environmental impact has been a concern. The successful trial of compostable stickers by Nutrano offers a potential solution, providing an environmentally friendly alternative without compromising traceability or product information.
This initiative is part of Nutrano’s broader sustainability strategy aimed at minimizing the environmental footprint of its fresh produce operations. The company views the trial as a positive step towards sustainable packaging solutions, with the potential to expand the use of compostable stickers across other produce lines in the future.
